There’s a strange feeling that comes with no longer fitting your dreams around a full-time job.
For years, everything I built lived in the margins of my career. Consulting calls squeezed into lunch breaks. Substack articles written late at night. YouTube videos recorded on weekends. Discord questions answered whenever I could steal the time.
Now it’s the opposite. The business has to support my family.
That inversion has been one of the biggest adjustments of my life, and I want to walk you through what it actually looks like, because the view from the outside misses almost all of it.
What “full-time creator” actually means
People say successful creators treat content like a 9-to-5. Most people hear that and picture someone sitting around making videos all day.
The reality is different. Running a creator business is much closer to running a small company than most people realize.
Three days each week go to consulting. Those calendars are filling up, and I’m grateful for it.
The other days are not days off. They go to researching visa changes and tax rules so nothing I publish is stale. Building closing packages for clients. Updating guides. Answering Discord questions. Editing video. Writing articles. Planning content. Following markets. Learning new AI tools. Improving every system I have, because right now I am the systems.
Then comes the hardest part, the one nobody warns you about. How do you keep talking about relocation, taxes, investing, and financial independence without repeating yourself? How do you serve the person who has read every issue and the person who found you yesterday, in the same piece of writing?
That is the actual job. The videos are the visible ten percent.
The math nobody shows you
I’m not a massive creator. Forty-five thousand followers on TikTok sounds like a lot until you stand it next to accounts with hundreds of thousands, or millions. My YouTube channel still has fewer than 2,000 subscribers. YouTube itself pays me nothing.
That’s the biggest misconception people carry about this business. The platforms are not the income. They’re the front door.
The income comes from consulting. From the Discord community. From paid subscriptions to this publication. From people deciding, one at a time, that the information is worth paying for.
Which brings me to a problem most creators never talk about, because most business models are built to avoid it.
My best work reduces my repeat business
After nearly every consulting session, I build the client a personalized roadmap. Usually eight to fifteen pages: visas, domicile planning, taxes, investing, banking, healthcare, and the exact sequence of what to do next.
The feedback has been the best of anything I make. People tell me those packages save them weeks or months of research.
Here’s the funny part. They’re so complete that many clients never need a second session. They have the plan. They execute.
From the client’s side, that’s exactly the product I want to deliver. From the business side, it’s a structural problem: the better I do the work, the less anyone needs to come back.
Some clients stay on because we manage the longer arc together, portfolio strategy, market cycles, the financial plan that keeps evolving after the move. Some send referrals, which I never take for granted. But most people need the roadmap once.
And honestly, I’m okay with that. I would rather solve someone’s problem completely than design dependency into my own product. Plenty of this industry runs on the opposite model, information drip-fed to keep you subscribed and slightly anxious. I’m not building that.
But it does mean the recurring side of this business has to earn its place a different way: by producing new value continuously, not by withholding it.
So here’s what I’m doing about it
That is exactly what the paid side of this Substack is for. Every day I publish a BrightShadow Intelligence issue for paid subscribers: the financial execution layer under the free articles. Multi-currency structures, hedging, expat tax mechanics, account sequencing, the specific instruments and rules, with real numbers and the beginner traps called out. This week alone that meant a piece on the IRS rule that taxes you for paying off a foreign mortgage, and one on what happens to your HSA the month you move abroad.
It’s the same philosophy as the roadmaps: complete answers you can act on. The difference is that the landscape keeps moving, visa rules change, tax thresholds reset, currencies swing, so the value renews itself daily.
Since I’m asking readers to bet on that model, the model where you pay for ongoing value instead of gated basics, I want to lower the cost of testing it. For the rest of July, the paid subscription is 30% off, and that rate locks in for as long as you stay subscribed. [OFFER LINK]
If the free articles have saved you time or money, this is the direct version of that, every day, and it’s the single most effective way to support a reader-funded operation like this one.
No pressure either way. The free work continues regardless. That’s the deal and it doesn’t change.
Still building, in public
One thing I never want to lose is the reason I think many of you are here in the first place.
I’m not interested in pretending the build is finished. I’m 35 days into replacing a salary with something I built myself, and I’m doing it from a new country, with a wife, a young daughter, and a dog. Before the layoff I was running AI workshops for small businesses, and now that I control my own calendar, that thread is back on the table too: helping entrepreneurs put AI to work while showing exactly how I use the same tools inside this company. That might be part of the next chapter. When I know, you’ll know.
You’re watching the story get written in real time, and that’s the point. I don’t want this publication to become a marketing machine. I want it to stay a place where I document what works, what doesn’t, and what I’d do differently, the same way I’d want it documented for me.
But I’ve also learned something this month that’s impossible to ignore: authenticity doesn’t pay the bills by itself. Building something valuable does. The balance between serving people first and building a business that supports my family is the newest problem I’m solving, and like everything else here, I’m solving it in front of you.
If you’re still reading these updates, thank you for being part of it.
We’re still writing the story together.
